Tarot is a divination tool often misunderstood, and even misused by some, as a "fortune telling," prophecy revealing, entity channeling "dance with the devil." Yes, there are many charlatans out there who misuse and disrespect the tools. But that is NOT what Tarot was, is, or ever will be. The cards and the facilitator are merely tools for you to tap into your own well of inner knowing. Re-member-ing. Gnosis.
The Tarot is broken down into two parts, the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana is also what the Journey of the Fool is based on. This journey is the cyclical initiation process of a person's personal human journey.
The first card is The Fool and traditionally depicts a young man with his nap sack and his dog setting off on a new journey. He is shown in motion with a smile on his face and one foot stepping off the edge of a cliff into the unknown of the journey. In this context the term "fool" is not indicative of "stupidity," but rather a naive ignorance.
We all start our journeys ignorant, which is only a lack of awareness. We set out on these journeys to learn lessons through the initiatory process where we are put in positions to challenge our prior beliefs and understandings. It is these challenges and how we face them that determines if we remain ignorant, become aware, or move on to stupid.
We then cycle back into the next journey, locked into the lesson until we finally navigate it. We each have multiple journeys of this nature going on simultaneously.
This is the traditional Fool card:

While I have used the Rider-Waite deck, I now use a couple contemporary decks: The Sacred Circle Tarot and the Wild Unknown. And I now do an amazing double spread option that combines both decks for additional depth and awareness.
To give you an idea of the symbolism and theme of each of these decks, here are the cards in each corresponding to the Rider-Waite version of The Fool:
